I couldn't comment on the actress - not only being straight, but not having watched Doctor Who.
But you're right about the fear thing - something in front of you can never be as scary as something which is created by your imagination. My mother remembers when the first(?) Doctor Who series came out. She was four or five at the time, and she remembers being at a neighbour's house (they didn't have a television) and hiding behind the sofa for the duration of the programme each week. She still can't listen to the theme tune today!

Am I alone in thinking that Sally Sparrow would have made a good companion for the next series?
And yes, I rate this as the scariest episode yet. I was alone when I watched it and a good few times it made my blood run cold.
